This is going to be the focus of Amalga Distillery. If you live here in Juneau or have visited, you are probably already thinking that it is the perfect fit. From our temperate maritime climate and proximity to the water, to the green mountains and gorgeous freshwater streams – we are as close as you can come to being Hebridian in North America. So, we want to embrace this climate and this community, and create a whiskey that is fitting. A single malt in the tradition of a Scottish Single Malt, but using distinctly Pacific Northwest ingredients; malted barley from Washington, Canada and, of course, Alaska. Malt that has been toasted not only with peat, but the alder wood that is a mainstay of Alaska tradition for heating our homes, smoking salmon, and creating the iconic Alaskan Brewing Company Smoked Porter. We look forward to making a whiskey that fits perfectly into this landscape, shaped by the salt air, the temperate climate and our amazing glacial and snowmelt waters.

We also know that Juneau is the right community for such a venture. Our community is vibrant, artistic and active. Wedged between mountains and glaciers and the sea, and accessible only by boat and plane, life here is spectacular, and we are so excited to bring another incredible asset to this town. Alaskan Brewing Company showed the world what Alaska, and specifically Juneau, can offer in terms of beer. Amalga Distillery looks forward to doing the same for single malt whiskey. Follow us as we move closer to our first release. It will be a few years still, but we promise it will be worth the wait. When you combine the best ingredients of the Pacific Northwest, the purest Alaskan water, and the inspiration of Juneau’s natural and cultural beauty, great things are sure to come.

Check back regularly, as we plan to share the process of creating our distillery. We’ve been doing a lot of research, trying a lot of fantastic whiskies, and meeting with a lot of incredible people. This blog is going to be our way of sharing our story with you!

    Hey Amalga Distillery!

Juneau is a wonderful place and we wish you the best in your distillery venture. Small distilleries are in 2015 where craft brewing was in the 80’s… the sky’s the limit. As small business owners who travel to Southeast as often as we can we’ll be planning on yet another place to go in Juneau.
